What is the WHOIS
The term “WHOIS” comes from the English “who is? “, literally translated by who is?.
Applied to the world of domain names, a WHOIS is a directory (also we can say WHOIS directory) that allows you to list the technical and legal information of a domain name.
With this information, it is possible to determine the owner of the domain name, the person to contact in case of problem (administrative contact of the domain name), as well as the technical contact who administers the domain name.
The fields displayed during the WHOIS consultation are specific to domain name registries, but include the following elements:
The name of the domain consulted;
The name, address, phone number, fax (possibly), email of the domain name owner;
The NIC identifiers of the owner, the technical contact and the billing contact;
The addresses (or IP) of DNS servers;
The dates of creation, modification and expiration of the domain name consulted during the WHOIS
When you consult the WHOIS for a particular domain name, if the WHOIS directory does not return anything, it is because the domain name is available for registration.
What are the terms of use of WHOIS
The data accessible on our WHOIS page is provided to you for informational purposes only, they can be used to help you obtain information about or about the registration of a domain name. We make this information available ‘as is’, and do not guarantee its accuracy.
By submitting a WHOIS search, you agree to use this data only within a framework authorized by applicable legislation and that under no circumstances will you use this data to:
(A) allow or encourage in any way the transmission by e-mail, telephone, or fax, of mass commercial solicitations and unsolicited advertisements or
(B) allow automated, high-volume methods that send requests or data to the systems of any ICANN accredited Registry or Registrar, except as reasonably necessary to register domain names or modify existing records.
WHOIS or RDAP what difference?
WHOIS and RDAP serve the same purpose: to consult the registration information of a domain name (owner, registrar, creation and expiration dates, DNS servers). What changes is the technology behind it.
WHOIS is the old system. It returns data in plain text, without standardized format or security, which makes it difficult to exploit and not very compatible with data protection rules such as the GDPR.
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is its successor. It returns structured and machine-readable data, manages several languages and alphabets, and allows differentiated access: the general public sees public information, while authorized actors (authorities, rights holders) access additional data on request.
Since January 28, 2025, RDAP has become the reference source for generic extensions (.com, .net, .org…), replacing WHOIS.
For you, the information available on your domain remains the same: it is the access method that is modernizing.
