What are the eligibility conditions for a .eu?

To register a domain name in .eu, you must meet at least one of the three criteria set by the EURid register: be a citizen of the European Union or the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), regardless of your place of residence in the world; be a natural person residing in an EU or EEA Member State; or be an established company or organization (head office, central administration or main establishment) within that same area.

In summary, the .eu domain name is available to any individual or organisation with an official connection to the European Union or the European Economic Area (EEA).

Here is the exact list of eligible applicants:

1. Individuals

  • Any citizen of an EU or EEA Member State (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), regardless of where they live in the world (for example, a French citizen living in the United States or Japan is eligible).
  • Any individual who is not an EU or EEA citizen but who legally resides in an EU or EEA Member State.

2. Companies and organisations

  • Any company whose registered office, central administration or principal place of business is located within the EU or EEA.
  • Any organisation, association or institution established within an EU or EEA Member State.

Please note: The Registry (EURid) carries out eligibility checks. If the domain name holder no longer meets these criteria (for example, following Brexit for certain UK-based entities or individuals who are not residents), the domain name may be suspended or revoked.

Here are the main benefits of a .eu domain name:

  • Pan-European visibility and reach: It instantly positions your brand or project across the European market, allowing you to target more than 440 million consumers without being restricted to a national domain extension such as .fr or .de.
  • Enhanced trust and security: Reserved exclusively for EU/EEA citizens, residents and businesses, the .eu domain operates within a strict legal framework. It supports compliance with the GDPR and high cybersecurity standards, helping to reassure your visitors.
  • Greater domain name availability: Less saturated than .com, the .eu extension gives you a better chance of finding a short, impactful domain name that perfectly matches your brand name.
  • A modern and multicultural image: It supports Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), allowing you to register domain names using accented characters or specific alphabets such as Cyrillic or Greek, so you can address customers in their native language.
  • A strong European identity: It is an excellent communication tool for highlighting your connection to European values such as quality, responsibility and transparency, while showcasing local expertise internationally.
