What is Registry Lock?

Recommended by ANSSI, the Registry lock is not only a protection tool, it is a true advanced line of defense against hijacking threats targeting the most sensitive domain names.

The Registry lock, or Registry Lock, allows a holder to lock information related to his domain name with the Registry. Unlocking is executed after an authentication of the holder called authenticated contact.

Why lock your name with the Registry Lock?

This service is particularly recommended for organizations that have domain names with high reputation or generate significant traffic. By adding a human authentication layer in the modification process, the Registry lock introduces an almost insurmountable barrier for attackers, even if a customer account is compromised.

Enhanced security activation is also paramount before critical periods, such as a marketing campaign, product launch or intense commercial period, where domain name stability and reliability are paramount for brand image and revenue. It is thus part of the digital strategy of companies concerned about the continuity of their online presence.

What are the steps to lock a domain?

Unlock Request

The owner of the domain name requests the unlocking, temporary or permanent, of the domain name.

Acknowledgement of receipt of the request

The register acknowledges receipt of the request. He exchanges by e-mail, with code, validation link or phone call to authorized contacts for validation with password.

Unleave the domain name

Following the authentication, verification and validation of the registry, the name is unlocked. The modification procedure must take a maximum of 48 hours beyond which the name is automatically re-locked.

Report on changes

Information on changes is sent to authorized contacts.

What is the difference between a Registry Lock and a Registrar Lock?

Registrar Lock is a security lock managed by the domain registrar. Its main purpose is to prevent the domain from being transferred to another registrar and to restrict certain sensitive changes from the customer account.

Registry Lock, on the other hand, provides a much higher level of protection because it is applied directly at the registry level, which manages the domain extension. It therefore protects against domain deletion, critical changes, and fraudulent transfers, even if the registrar account itself were compromised.

In practice, Registrar Lock is suitable as a standard security measure for most domain names, while Registry Lock is designed for strategic domain names requiring the highest level of protection, particularly when web hosting and business email services depend on the domain’s continuous availability and integrity.

As part of efforts to secure sensitive information systems, the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) explicitly recommends implementing the Registry Lock service for domain names considered critical.

This recommendation appears in particular in the agency’s best-practice guidance, where Registry Lock is presented as a highly effective protection measure against impersonation attacks, domain hijacking, and malicious domain name deletion.

ANSSI stresses the importance of preventing any changes to domain name data without additional verification and recommends the use of strong authentication procedures, which is precisely what Registry Lock provides. This approach is part of a broader digital resilience strategy: protecting an organisation’s online identity also means safeguarding its image, reputation, and the trust of its users.

For public-sector organisations, operators of vital importance (OIVs), or any company exposed to cyber threats, registry-level locking is no longer simply an option but a strategic necessity aligned with today’s requirements for institutional cybersecurity.

Registry Lock is an essential security measure for a domain name because it adds an additional layer of protection directly at the registry level, making any unauthorised deletion, modification, or transfer significantly more difficult.

This protection is particularly valuable for businesses and online projects that rely on a stable domain for their web hosting and professional email addresses.

In the event of a hacking attempt, human error, or fraudulent request, Registry Lock significantly reduces the risk of service disruption, traffic loss, or damage to the organisation’s brand image.

For strategic websites, it therefore acts as a trusted security mechanism that strengthens continuity, compliance, and the overall security of an organisation’s online presence.
